iOS 15 will use Face ID data to match and verify digital documents

After digging into the iOS 15 Beta version code, Apple is developing a security system for its upcoming digital ID function, which relies on the user’s facial photos for identity verification. Apple will expand the utility of its Wallet application in the iOS 15 system, which can bind various government-issued documents, and carry digital documents including driver’s licenses on the iPhone.

Quoting 9to5Mac reported that users who wish to add their credentials to the Wallet application will be directed to a verification process by capturing facial images to verify their identity. According to reports, the program is similar to setting up Face ID, with an animation prompting users to rotate their heads and perform other actions when the front camera captures their facial images.

According to the report, unlike Face ID, which captures multiple angles of the user’s face, ID verification requires the user to look sideways, close eyes, raise eyebrows, open mouth, and smile. How to ensure that the verified face information matches the ID photo is currently unclear. But the iOS 15 code indicates that the wallet will use processing on the device to perform the verification phase. Facial recognition seems to play a role in this technology.

This security measure should alleviate some concerns about identity theft. At the WWDC held in June, Apple announced its support for documents. This feature will first be launched in the United States, and the ID card, including name, date of birth, photo, and real identity status, will be stored in a safe and encrypted location on the iPhone for later recall. Access is protected by Face ID or password.

Only a few states in the United States have introduced digital IDs, which will one day be compatible with wallets. Other states are experimenting with this technology, but it is unclear whether these systems will be ready when the iOS 15 system debuts this fall. Apple said in June that it is cooperating with the US Transportation Security Administration to promote the use of this feature at airports.
