The new Telegram beta adds interesting features

An update to the Telegram beta released today introduces a number of interesting new features, such as video playback speed controls and screen sharing, although the latter still seems very unstable.

Telegram’s 7.9.0 beta added new controls for video playback speed, both for local ones shared via the app and for links to videos like YouTube. The option is accessible by touching the three vertical dots menu at the top right during playback, then selecting the Speed item which allows playback at 0.2x, 0.5x, 1x, 1.5x and 2x.

The new option to share the screen during a 1 to 1 video call is well hidden and seems to work on average one in five times. When you make a video call with someone, the feature allows you to start sharing the screen by first stopping the current video and sharing your choice between the smartphone screen and what has been captured by the front or rear camera.

A confirmation request will follow to start the transmission, after which the relative red button will appear in the status bar at the top. Other minor additions to this beta version of Telegram consist of a new option to clear a chat history when it is older than a month and the ability to float video message previews when scrolling up or down.

If you are interested in trying these features, simply download and manually install the APK of the latest Telegram beta version which you can find here.
