Google internally testing Chrome’s Tab Cache Turned Off feature

The task of quickly restoring recently closed tabs in Google Chrome started as early as a year ago. The long-awaited tab cache turned off feature is now available for testing in the Canary version of the Chrome browser. Google warns that this feature is highly experimental and will cause various glitches, so don’t enable it now unless you know what you are doing.

What is the closed tag cache?

If you close a tab, Chrome will usually close the page. If you restore the page by selecting the Reopen closed tabs (Ctrl+Shift+T) button in the right-click menu of the tab bar, it may take more time To fully load. Instead of closing the page, the Chrome browser puts the contents of closed tabs in a special cache and makes them immediately available when you need them.

The back cache function is available on both the desktop and Android. It can make the back and forward navigation operations take effect immediately, almost without waiting. The working principle of Closed Tab Cache is similar to Back Forward Cache. According to the design document, Closed Tab Cache can already be used on Android Chrome.

How to test and enable Closed Tab Cache in Chrome?

Now, this feature can be tested in the 94.0.4606.0 version of Canary. To test it, you only need:

  • Launch Chrome browser
  • Visit chrome://flags/#closed-tab-cache
  • Find the Closed Tab Cache tag
  • Select Enabled and restart the browser.

The Chrome browser can open the recently closed tab within a few seconds after setting it. When Google finally implements Closed Tab Cache for the stable version of the Chrome browser, the effect should be better.

  • If you are running the stable version, here are other ways to reopen closed tabs in Chrome.
  • Use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+T on Windows instead of using the mouse.
  • Chrome is also equipped with a tag search function that can list open and recently closed tags.

Click the tag search icon on the toolbar, and click the item under the recently closed tag to restore it. This process involves more clicks, but the feature lists all recently closed tabs and lets you open any tab you want from the menu.
