The US announces an investigation into Tesla’s autopilot system

On August 16th, Agence France-Presse reported that after 11 accidents, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced an investigation into Tesla’s autonomous driving system. In addition, the Associated Press also reported that the US government has officially launched an investigation into Tesla’s autonomous driving system. The survey covers all of Tesla’s current Model Y, Model X, Model S and Model 3 models, involving 760,000 Tesla vehicles.

In the accidents involved in the investigation, 17 people were injured and 1 person died. Tesla and other automakers have previously warned drivers to be prepared for human intervention when using the system.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said on Monday that after a series of crashes involving emergency vehicles, they have launched a formal safety investigation into Tesla’s autonomous driving system.

NHTSA said that the investigation covered about 765,000 Tesla vehicles in the United States. Most accidents occurred after dark. The collision site included on-site control measures, such as emergency vehicle lights, flares, illuminated arrow boards and road cones.

In recent years, NHTSA has dispatched many specialized accident investigation teams to review Tesla’s accidents. In June, NHTSA stated that it had sent a team to review 30 car accidents that were suspected of turning on Tesla’s autopilot since 2016, and 10 of them died.

The agency stated in the document: Most accidents occur after dark, and the control measures at the accident site include emergency vehicle lights, flares, illuminated arrow boards and road cones. The relevant vehicles have all been confirmed to be in automatic driving or traffic-aware cruise control state in the event of a collision. After the news was released, Tesla’s US stocks fell before the market, and the decline continued to expand after the early trading. As of press time, it fell nearly 5% to US$682.67.

In addition, the new energy vehicle sector in the US stocks also fell on Monday, and the decline in early trading expanded. Faraday Future fell more than 10%, Xiaopeng Motors, Weilai Automobile fell 7%, and Ideal Automobile fell 4%.
