Samsung Display officially launched UPC under-screen camera technology

Today, Samsung Display announced the official launch of UPC (Under Panel Camera) technology. This technology can embed the smartphone’s front camera into the display panel, thereby eliminating the camera pinhole. Samsung applied this technology to the foldable display on the recently released Galaxy Z Fold 3 for the first time.

According to reports, Samsung Display’s UPC technology is realized through the Eco² OLED that improves the light transmittance of the panel and optimizes the pixel aperture technology. Among them, the light transmittance of Eco² OLED has increased by more than 33% compared with previous panels.

Samsung Display said that existing through-hole smartphones have increased the screen-to-body ratio. It punches a small hole in the panel to place the camera and realizes the front camera. However, UPC technology can embed the camera module in the panel, and operate the camera only when necessary, so that when the front camera is not turned on, the entire display screen can be used 100%.

In addition, Samsung Display has adopted a technology that minimizes the chromatic aberration between the UPC pinholes and the surrounding screen, which is one step closer to realizing a full screen.
