Survey: Global Tesla car owners use about 11% of the FSD feature package

A study by Troy Teslike, a market research organization that tracks Tesla, this week showed that among more than 17,000 Tesla owners worldwide, Tesla is fully automatic. For many reasons, Tesla’s FSD function package has been controversial, the main reason is that the function package is not true to its name, and it cannot enable the vehicle to achieve true autonomous driving. Tesla is just a promise that it will release software updates in the future to eventually realize fully autonomous driving.

At present, this feature pack contains functions mainly from Tesla’s previous Enhanced Autopilot, involving Autopilot automatic cruise, automatic lane change, automatic parking and vehicle call, etc. However, in the United States, after the launch of the FSD feature pack, Tesla simultaneously increased the price by $10,000. Tesla also stated that the price of this feature package will continue to rise as more features are released in the future to achieve fully automatic driving.

Utilization rate data, that is, data on the proportion of car owners who have purchased the feature package, well shows the car owners’ confidence in Tesla’s fulfillment of this promise. At the same time, this is also very important for Tesla’s financial performance, because every Tesla vehicle has the necessary hardware installed regardless of whether the user purchases FSD or not. If the car owner simultaneously purchases the FSD feature package when buying the car, Tesla can get higher profits.

Troy Teslike’s research shows that the utilization rate of FSD has increased significantly in 2019 when Tesla just upgraded Enhanced Autopilot to FSD. But with the price increase of this feature pack, the utilization rate has dropped significantly. In addition, sales growth in China and Europe also has an impact, because FSD’s functions in these markets are not very useful, and compared with the US market, the road to real fully automated driving in these markets is longer.

In addition, it is expected that the proportion of owners of higher-end models Model S and Model X buying FSD feature packages is much higher than that of the lower-priced Model 3 and Model Y models. Troy Teslike’s statistics are as of July 2021. Subsequently, Tesla launched the FSD monthly package, which is expected to help increase the utilization rate of FSD.

The real change may be the full release of FSD Beta software. The release of the software has been delayed several times, but Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently stated that it should be released in about a month. In the United States, this is expected to greatly increase the use of FSD.
