Twitter launches Communities feature, want to compete with Facebook and Reddit

According to the latest reports, Twitter has launched Communities, which compete with Facebook Groups and Reddit, which can tweet with people who share common interests. Starting on Wednesday, Twitter users can be invited to join the first communities, including #AstroTwitter, #DogTwitter, #SkincareTwitter and #SoleFood (a group of sneaker lovers).

Once joining a community, users can tweet directly to other members, not just their followers. Only community members can like or reply to tweets sent by other members. It is understood that similar to the sub-sections of Facebook and Reddit, each Twitter Community has its own moderator-they can set rules, invite or delete users.

Twitter invited some users to create the first Communities and allowed anyone to apply to create their own community on its website. The company said in a statement: The community currently only accepts invitations, but we are working hard to get people to discover and join the community they want to be a member of. This makes joining a community better than joining a public group on Reddit or Facebook. Twitter also approved the moderator’s launch.

For Twitter, Communities is an obvious move because its users have long formed niche groups around specific interests such as media and encryption. Twitter is now formalizing this dynamic into a product, and it plans to eventually place it in the front and center of the main navigation bar of the mobile application.

iOS users can access Communities through the tabs on the navigation bar, while web users will see the Communities tab on the sidebar. On Android, you can only read community tweets right now-Twitter said that additional features will appear soon.

For a long time, Twitter has been trying to retain those users who will not always find relevant tweets or follow accounts. To help solve this problem, the company has prioritized recommendations on topics such as professional sports teams in the past few years. If Twitter allows anyone to create and easily promote their own communities, then this feature will make the app more attractive to casual users who have not invested a lot of effort in managing their main timeline.

In February of this year, Twitter announced for the first time that it is developing the Communities function in a speech to investors, saying that its goal is to “make it easier for users to form, discover and participate in conversations with relevant communities or regions of interest to them.” This means that Communities can also imitate applications such as Nextdoor to recommend groups for people living in specific cities or communities.

Communities is the latest in a series of major products launched by Twitter last year. These products include voice chat feature Spaces, paid tweets and push newsletter hosting.
