Pixel 6 series will add Live Translate feature

According to the latest report, Google plans to introduce a new version of Live Translate in the Pixel 6 series. And this feature will be open to more Android devices in the Android 12 system in the future. Last week, a tipster who obtained the Pixel 6 Pro in advance shared relevant information to the external media XDA.

Among them, there is an unreleased Android System Intelligence application in Pixel 6 Pro, which was previously called Device Personalization Services. This application is responsible for providing several software functions on Pixel phones, including Live Caption, Screen Attention and so on.

This app will also include the service of the new Live Translate feature, which will debut on the Pixel 6 series but may also appear on older Pixel phones running Android 12. Live Translate is the only new software feature confirmed after Google launched Pixel 6 marketing last month. At the time, Google did not clearly confirm the name of this new feature, but they did tell publications such as The Verge and The Washington Post that Pixel 6 will be able to generate real-time subtitles for the content you are watching or listening to.

The Verge was even able to see the demo of this feature in person, translating French into English in real-time, but unfortunately, they were not allowed to share any pictures or videos in the demo. From the beginning of the setup process of Live Translate, we can already see that there is one aspect of this feature that has not been reported before. Live Translate not only allows you to translate subtitles into the language of your choice, but it can also translate messages, text detected in the camera’s viewfinder, and act as a translator based on the language of your choice.

After completing the initial setup process, you can find Live Translate under Settings> System. Here, you can switch this function, choose whether to allow downloading language models through mobile data, select the language you want to translate and download a new language model. The size of the language model varies from 50-200MB, depending on the supported features. For example, selecting Japanese will allow you to translate messages, subtitles, and text in the camera viewfinder while selecting Mandarin will only allow you to translate information and text in the camera.
