YouTube tests Google Assistant integration

The YouTube team is experimenting with a new feature on Android that allows you to get suggestions for topics related to the video the user is watching using Google Assistant technology. Expanding the description while watching certain videos and scrolling down will display suggestions consistent with the content currently playing, such as information about the movie, character, location, etc.

Tapping the tab launches a Google Assistant search that shows information about the musicians in a panel if the video is a song and about other movies if you are watching a trailer. Google Assistant suggests topics related to YouTube videos.

This is a more convenient way of finding video-related topics than performing a manual search, however not all videos show suggestions. It would be interesting to know if Google Assistant extracts information directly from the video or if YouTube tags and descriptions are exploited.

The experimental Do more with Google Assistant feature can be enabled on youtube.com/new by subscribers to the YouTube Premium service. The experiment is only available on English-language Android smartphones until October 26. We remind you that only one test can be enabled at a time.
