Users spent nearly $34 billion on apps in Q3 of 2021

A new report released by Sensor Tower stated that in Apple’s App Store and Google’s Play Store, customers spent $33.6 billion in the third quarter of 2021, a year-on-year increase of 15.1%. After reporting year-on-year growth of 22.1% in App Store spending in the first half of 2021, the study found that both it and Google Play Store continued to experience substantial growth.

But since the coronavirus pandemic created a surge in app usage in 2020, the new 15.1% growth in the third quarter of 2021 has slowed compared to the 32% year-on-year growth in the third quarter of 2020.

The growth was mainly driven by Google Play. The company’s consumer spending increased from 10.2 billion U.S. dollars year on year by 18.6% to 12.1 billion U.S. dollars, the company said in a statement. Although Apple’s app store’s growth is relatively modest, its consumer spending is as high as in previous years, with revenue climbing from US$19 billion to US$21.5 billion, an increase of 13.2%. As in previous periods, consumers are Apple’s market cost is 1.8 times that of Google’s.

TikTok has been downloaded more than 3 billion times, which is said to be the first time for a non-Facebook application. This total puts it among the best on the App Store and third on Google Play-second only to Facebook and Instagram. In general, the number of times that users install an app for the first time has declined compared with last year.

In the third quarter of 2021, the [first] app installs on the Apple App Store dropped by 1.2%, from 8.2 billion to 8.1 billion, and Google’s market dropped from 28.2 billion to 27.6 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 2.1%.

At present, Apple’s application store is the object of antitrust accusations by governments of many countries around the world, and the company has been making changes to respond. However, Morgan Stanley analyst Katie Huberty said that these changes will not cause any major damage to Apple’s app sales profits.
