Google releases Android 12 compatibility definition file highlighting requirements for hardware devices

Google recently released the AOSP version of Android 12. Although the release for Google Pixel devices will take some time, many changes are taking place. Now that the latest Android Compatibility Definition File (CDD) has been released, it outlines everything that OEMs will have to pay attention to.

Google has finally listed in the smartphone all the conditions needed to run on the Android 12 system. The Android compatibility definition file has always been an integral part of the Android ecosystem.

This is done to ensure the consistency of API and platform behavior between Android devices. Google bundles the distribution of Google mobile services with the license agreement to ensure that devices comply with the rules of the Google Android Compatibility Program.

If for some reason, the device fails to meet the requirements listed in the CDD, it may not pass Google’s compatibility test suite, resulting in the loss of Google’s application suite. In Android 12, CDD has brought some new changes. However, most of them are small and will only affect OEMs. The most important change is the introduction of a performance class, which can be defined in the build properties of Android smartphones.

Google announced this when it released Android 12 Beta 1, which is an easy way for developers to check how fast Android smartphones are. Google also mentioned that each version of Android has its own performance level, which means that the performance level of Android 12 may be different from the performance level of future Android versions.

These performance levels are also forward compatible. This means that the device can be updated to a new Android version without changing its performance level, but it also means that if the device meets the requirements of the new Android version, its level can be changed. CDD refers to performance levels 11 and 12 as performance levels R and S. The following are some of the key requirements for Android 12.

The device must have at least 6GB of memory. The screen must be at least 400dpi pixel density and 1080p resolution. At least 120MB/s continuous write speed, 250MB/s continuous read speed, 10MB/s random write and 40MB/s random read speed. The phone must have at least a 12-megapixel rear camera capable of 4K 30 FPS shooting, and at least 4 million pixel front camera capable of 1080p FPS shooting.

The performance level may be helpful to developers, so they can not only improve the overall experience of devices that meet the performance level requirements, but also improve the experience of lower or medium devices in the specification sheet.
