Windows 11 banned EdgeDeflector and others from modifying the default browser link

According to the previous reports, Microsoft has been striving to force Windows users to use the Edge browser, often forcing links to be opened in the browser using the Microsoft-edge:// protocol. For example, this protocol is used in the built-in Windows search and News and Interests widgets, and most users expect links from these sources to be opened in their default browser.

Users can fight back by using tools like Edge Deflector to modify the Microsoft-edge:// protocol and direct the link to any browser. But now Edge Deflector developers report that Microsoft has made the protocol on Windows 11 incapable of being hijacked, which means the Edge Deflector application is no longer valid.

According to The Verge, a Microsoft spokesperson has responded to this situation: Windows 10 and Windows 11 provide some end-to-end customer experience. For example, the search experience on the taskbar is such an end-to-end experience. It’s not designed for redirection. When we realize an incorrect redirection, a fix will be issued to fix it. This fix is part of the upcoming Windows 11 update, which will be available to Beta and Release Preview users later on Friday.
