Google CEO Pichai: Google’s next growth point is still search, not meta universe

When many other technology giants took Meta Universe as their next growth point, Google CEO Sundar Pichai started from the oldest Internet search. The future is seen in the service. Pichai said in an interview with the media today: I feel fortunate that our mission is eternal. Now more than ever, we need to organize information.

Earlier this month, Google’s parent company Alphabet’s market value briefly exceeded US$2 trillion, thanks to sales and profit growth during the epidemic. When asked where the next trillion will come from, Pichai pointed to the company’s core service (search).

He predicts that consumers will ask more questions to computers through voice and multi-modal experience. Pichai said: Being able to adapt to all this and further improve the search will still be the biggest opportunity.

Since taking over Google in 2015, Pichai has been pushing the company deeper into the field of cloud computing and artificial intelligence. In the interview, Pichai cited Google’s key growth businesses, including cloud business, YouTube video services and application stores. He said that investment in artificial intelligence is the foundation of every business.

Pichai also said that it is expected that more Google products will first be developed and tested in Asia, and then promoted to the world. In contrast, some of Google’s largest peers, such as Microsoft and Facebook’s parent company Meta Platforms, are betting the company’s future on the virtual world “meta-universe”. Google has also taken action in virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) products, but with little success.

A few years ago, Google’s first attempt in this regard, Google Glass, ended in failure. Recently, Google incorporated related work into a new department, reporting to Pichai, although it has not announced a specific strategy. Pichai said: “I have always been excited about the future of immersive computing (including VR and AR). This does not belong to any company, this is the evolution of the Internet.”

Advocates of Meta Universe often talk about the potential of building new technologies, such as blockchain and digital cryptocurrency. But apart from some cloud partnerships, Google has largely avoided related businesses. Pichai also stated that he himself does not own any digital cryptocurrency. And Apple CEO Tim Cook said last week that he personally owns digital cryptocurrency, but Apple will not invest in this business.
