Linux 5.17 will provide support for several older Tegra tablets

Although the Nvidia Tegra chipset has become less popular over time, Linux 5.17, which is scheduled to arrive in early 2022, has not completely abandoned it. As can be seen from the batch of patches released this week, it is committed to improving the Linux mainline kernel’s support for several tablets using the older Tegra chipset. The DeviceTree has added ASUS Transformer Prime TF201, Transform Pad TF300TG, and Transform Infinity TF700T.

As a product of the NVIDIA Tegra 3 era, this SoC is equipped with four ARM Cortex-A9 + one ARM NEON cores and integrates a pretty good GPU component at the time. Judging by today’s standards ten years later, the specifications of the above-mentioned Asus Transformer Tablet PCs are clearly not in the market. But if you happen to own one or feel that second-hand is cost-effective, then Linux 5.17 does not dislike them.

In addition, the Pegatron Chagall/Fujitsu Stylistic M532 tablet based on the Tegra 3 tablet and the Byan Big Chromebook netbook (equipped with a 1080p screen) derived from the DT version will also be supported by the mainline DeviceTree in the next version of the Linux kernel update. Finally, this batch of patches around Tegra for Linux 5.17 also enabled video decoder support for Tegra114 (Tegra 4).
