Wear OS: It is now easier to know the Android version and security patches

Google is simplifying the way they show the version of Android on their smartwatch. Through a software update, in fact, a new design for the System Updates screen has been implemented on Wear OS which includes both a reference to the current Android version present on the wearable and to the security patches.

The new interface was first found on a Fossil Gen 5. Previously, remember, there was only a blue checkmark indicating that the clock was up to date and system versions were indicated by letters instead of numbers. The new approach was chosen by Google certainly makes more sense and makes it easier to determine if your smartwatch needs to be updated or not.

In addition to the information on the Android version, as mentioned, there is also a reference to the update date of the security patches. Previously, this information was at the bottom of the “Version” list. All these changes are included in version 21.42.18 of the Google Play Services.

This change may also have been made ahead of the launch of Wear OS 3 which will arrive on select Android smartwatches early next year. The new version of the operating system was developed in close collaboration with Samsung and represents a significant renewal compared to the past.

By working with Samsung, and integrating several Tizen OS features, Google has achieved better performance, longer battery life, and a “thriving developer community” on Wear OS. The unified platform will be available to all manufacturers and will make it easier for developers to build applications.
