Microsoft Edge and Chrome will get new clipboard features on Windows 10/11

Microsoft is working with Google to develop a new API called Picking Clipboard, which will upgrade the existing clipboard functions of browsers such as Chrome and Edge. This big clipboard update is expected to improve the copy and paste functions of Windows 10 and Windows 11. This change is especially helpful for those who often deal with online image editors, Office applications and upload platforms.

Microsoft’s new API will extend the copy and paste capabilities. Now, you can use your browser to copy and paste a small number of files directly between the website and the Windows application. The list of supported file formats includes .JPG or .JPEG, PNG, HTML and some other formats.

Chromium-based browsers currently rely on the Async Clipboard API, which will also provide support for the new Pickling Clipboard, allowing applications to read and write commonly used formats to the operating system clipboard so that websites and native Windows applications can interact with them Interaction, such as text and images.

Through the proposed Picple Clipboard API, users can also copy and paste a wide range of popular file types, such as .docx and TIFF. The Docx format is used in Microsoft Word, and TIFF is used in graphic design. This change is expected to benefit various web applications that rely on users to upload content.

In a new update of the status page, Microsoft officials have confirmed that the feature may now arrive with the arrival of Chrome 98 or Edge 98. However, the plan will always change, and there is no guarantee that we will see a major upgrade to the clipboard in Chromium 98.

What is Chromium’s new Pickling Clipboard API?

The Pickling Clipboard API will allow websites to interact with more clipboard formats. In addition, to support for more formats, developers will be able to create their own custom clipboard formats and support copy and paste functions, as long as their solution does not affect the security of the operating system itself.

These file types will be based on the operating system’s clipboard, so users will be able to use keyboard shortcuts to copy the contents of almost all popular file formats and share them in different browsers, web applications and desktop applications.

Microsoft has confirmed that this feature will be compatible with today’s security standards. In addition, Microsoft will not allow these formats to interoperate with some traditional native applications. In order to improve performance, Microsoft will ensure that the clipboard data is not trimmed by the browser, which can prevent the loss of clipboard data during copying and pasting, and improve the integrity of the content.

In addition to these Chromium improvements, Microsoft is also developing Edge-specific features, such as Windows search integration.
