Sony showcases next-generation VR headset prototype devices

Sony hosted the Sony Technology Day online event yesterday to showcase various technologies that Sony is currently researching. One of the company’s products is a prototype VR headset with 8K resolution. The prototype uses two small 4K screens to achieve a high resolution of 4K for a single eye and 8K for both eyes.

This is not the first 8K virtual reality headset, but Sony said that the device will have extremely low latency for a real, natural and comfortable VR experience. If the final product is as described by Sony, it will enable more people to experience VR without motion sickness or other problems related to current headsets.

The current generation of VR headsets is easy to see pixels. Sony said that by increasing the number of dots on small OLEDs, it has been able to achieve finer details and avoid image pixelation. Using a large number of sensors can reduce latency, which in turn allows users to look around the virtual world without feeling dizzy, all of which can create a real virtual reality experience in real-time.

Sony believes that this VR technology can be used in games and other types of entertainment, such as music, medical training, and even industrial manufacturing. Sony is currently developing PlayStation VR 2, which may be released during Christmas 2022.
