Windows 11/10 Edge browser is testing support for variable refresh rates

According to the latest report, we usually associate variable refresh rate (VRR) with smartphones and even smartwatches, but Microsoft is now bringing the technology to desktop systems as well. Windows has been able to increase the screen refresh rate when playing games, using Windows 10 ‘s variable refresh rate feature and Windows 11 ‘s dynamic refresh rate.

Now, Microsoft Edge browser is increasing support for the technology, which allows the browser a faster refresh rate when scrolling, and reduce the refresh rate when reading e-mail or blog post, for example, when you’re just browsing, you can make scrolling smoother, longer battery life.

This feature is currently being tested in the Microsoft Edge Canary browser, and the Boost screen refresh rate when scrolling Flag appears in version 99, that is, Boost screen refresh rate when scrolling. However, it does require that your panel supports VRR and has the proper drivers. The good news is that many newer laptops already support this feature.

To see if your laptop supports VRR or DRR.

  • Open Settings and select System > Display > Advanced Display.
  • In Select, a refresh rate, select a refresh rate with Dynamic in its name.

You can now try out the Increase screen refresh rate while scrolling in the latest Edge Canary browser.
