New icon designs probably only with Android 13 for other apps

Google has surprisingly introduced the icon designs, but unfortunately not yet to the desired extent. The hoped-for update could come with Android 13. With Android 12, Google introduced the so-called icon designs and has thus provided a beta function for all users. The point here is that the app icons on the start screen adapt to the background image. This belongs to Material You with dynamic colors. But this is not yet possible for all app icons.

In fact, this should not be due to the laziness of the developers, but much more to the lack of an opportunity. There is probably no interface yet that third-party apps could use. The adaptive adjustment of the icons is therefore reserved for the Google apps. But that makes the feature unattractive.

Icon designs so far are rather pointless when using more than just Google apps

Who wants to have a few icons in the same style while keeping the rest brightly colored? That shouldn’t change until Android 13. Only then could there be an API that third-party providers could also hook into for their apps. There are probably already unofficial methods. In October I was of the opinion that this function would never get past the beta phase. Haven’t you given up hope yet?

Android 13 as the grand finale?

In any case, providing the function for other apps would complete the new theming system from Android 12 onwards. It’s already a great thing that at least in Google apps and in the system, the accent colors can be based on the background image. There should also be an expansion that brings more color palettes.
