Google is targeting gamers with new Chromebooks

It looks like Steam for Chrome OS is coming our way soon. Almost exactly two years after the first report, the project could now become a reality and, according to 9To5Google, three gaming Chromebooks are also being planned.

It is speculated that HP and Lenovo will be part of the first wave, but the third vendor (it has spotted the codename “Ripple”) is unknown. All Chromebooks will probably come with an RGB keyboard – and why not.

A new audience for Google

Chromebooks have become very popular in educational institutions in recent years, especially in the US. Chrome OS is not as present in the high-end segment, but a focus on gaming Chromebooks this year could definitely change that.

Google itself should not be there this year, at least it was revealed at the end of 2021 that there would be no new device with Chrome OS in 2022. But there is talk of planning a separate chip for laptops, so maybe not until 2023.

Google I/O is always a good place for such announcements, so it’s conceivable that Google will announce the move around May and then the hardware will arrive in the fall. But I also expect that this will be a US exclusive for the time being.
