OnePlus says goodbye to OxygenOS, is H2OOS coming?

Of all the brands we talk to you about every day, OnePlus is undoubtedly the most changeable one. Founded in 2014 by duo Carl Pei and Pete Lau, the company has since changed several aspects of its operations. Gone are the days when it rejected the rumors that saw it not as an independent entity, but as an OPPO company under a different name.

Since the merger with OPPO, OnePlus has announced important changes of pace both under the hardware and under the software level. In the first case, we saw it from how the Nord series has taken over and how the high end is being layered. In the second case, the latest editions of the OxygenOS are increasingly distant from its first versions.

Since the merger with OPPO was made public, OnePlus has announced the union of the OxygenOS and ColorOS teams to optimize software development. The two OSes have been substantially unified, with the integration of the software code that underlies the two interfaces in a reciprocal manner. Despite this marriage, OnePlus has been keen to let the Western public know that OxygenOS is there to stay.

This is because in China, however, the previous HydrogenOS has been completely replaced by ColorOS. On the other hand, the UI in China has never stood out compared to competitors such as MIUI, EMUI and ColorOS itself, belonging to much more successful brands in the mother country. Let’s not forget, then, that the first OnePlus smartphone mounted the ColorOS in China, while here it was CyanogenMod.

In all this, the leaker Mukul Sharm has found a patent filed by OnePlus that reveals the words H 2 O OS. A patent that arouses some curiosity, given the doubts that OxygenOS and ColorOS can continue to exist forever as two separate entities. Already with the latest OxygenOS 12 and ColorOS 12, we have noticed how the two UI are very similar if not almost identical.

As expected, this patent has sparked the community, which in H 2 O OS sees the name of the unified operating system of OnePlus and OPPO. A merger between HydrogenOS ( HOS ) and OxygenOS (O2OS) whose name would then become, WaterOS. From here to say that OnePlus and OPPO will abandon their respective OxygenOS and ColorOS 100%. But it is certainly a clue that points to an increasingly unified software direction.
