Microsoft Announces IE Driver: Helps enterprises test IE legacy content on Edge

While Internet Explorer is no longer being promoted as a standalone browser, that doesn’t mean it’s going away entirely. Through IE Mode, IE-related features have been integrated into the Microsoft Edge browser. This basically allows users to load certain web pages using the old IE configuration on the Chromium-based Edge browser.

Obviously, this comes in handy when trying to use apps or web pages that were built specifically for IE, and now Microsoft is making it easier to test those apps. As part of a collaboration with the Selenium project, a new Internet Explorer driver makes it possible to run Internet Explorer tests in the Edge browser.

Microsoft explained: In collaboration with our partners in the Selenium project, the Edge team is pleased to announce that you can now test Internet Explorer Mode on Microsoft Edge with the Internet Explorer Driver. Just do this to existing tests running against Internet Explorer. With a few changes, you can have your tests run in Internet Explorer (IE) mode in Edge. By running your tests in IE mode, any legacy web content running in IE will work as expected.

Microsoft says: Starting June 15, 2022, some Windows 10 feature updates will no longer support Internet Explorer 11. For more information, read the Internet Explorer 11 Desktop Application Requirements FAQ. We recommend still relying on IE11 Organizations transitioned to the Microsoft Edge browser, which supports the rendering of modern and traditional web content. In preparation for June 15, you can now use Internet Explorer Drive to verify that IE Mode is properly addressing legacy content in your business-critical environment.
