Chrome is redesigning the extension menu to refine extension permission management

Google is planning a redesign of the extensions menu in the Chrome browser. By adding a new permissions tab to the extension menu, it is easier to control access to extension sites. Previously, Chrome used the “…” menu to display installed extensions.

Google has now redesigned Chrome’s extension sidebar menu to show permissions in a separate tab, and it lists installed extensions in another tab.

In the new design, the Chrome extensions menu has two tabs: Permissions and Installed. The Permissions tab shows whether the extension agrees to read and write information on the current site or all sites, and lets you manage it when you click it.

The Install tab in the menu lists installed extensions and previous options, plus there’s the option to visit the Chrome Web Store for more extensions.

To enable this option, follow the steps below

  • Visit chrome://flags
  • Find the Experimental Flag Extensions Menu Access Control and set it to Enabled
  • Restart the browser

After rebooting, if you visit any website, you’ll notice an eye icon that shows the permissions tab (except for extensions), showing website access information. The above features are being tested in Chrome 100 Canary.

Google appears to be preparing to separate “permissions” from the Chrome extension menu and display it in a dedicated tab. In the new design in testing, the Chrome Extensions menu includes the Permissions and Installed tabs.
