Android 13: Google brings new screensavers to smartphones, Dreams mode including widgets

A few days ago, Google published the first developer preview of Android 13, which already had many innovations on board, but still has a lot more to offer: A teardown has now shown that the classic screensavers on smartphones should play a major role and maybe replace the always-on display. Including widgets with further information.

Screensavers are actually a relic of days gone by, but they are still very popular today due to the side effect of chic animations and variety. Google has now rediscovered them, too, because they are bringing new screensavers to Chrome OS and Android 13 should also benefit: A teardown of the first developer preview has shown that the new Dreams concept is coming to smartphones, which are comparable to screensavers in terms of their functionality.

Dreams are launched when the smartphone is idle. Namely, it also fits well with the concept of “Daydream” at the time. But Dreams should not only be about pictures or animations, but the content played should be able to be further upgraded. There is talk of Complications being placed over such Dream content. Complications, on the other hand, are known from Wear OS and, to put it simply, they are widgets that can display certain information.

The whole thing has the potential to replace the always-on display with its mostly modest content. The basic concept of the lowered display must of course remain, but users could get a lot more customization options.
