The first and so far only Google Chromecast with Google TV can’t keep up. Now, of all things, a cheaper model is planned. The current Chromecast is not really convincing for many reasons. It’s the first model with Google TV, but it doesn’t have enough hardware power for the software.
At least not if you look at the hardware price of around 70 euros and take a look at the competition. Unfortunately, a new model of the Chromecast should not be able to change this fact.
In the past few weeks, it has become known that Google is actually working on another Chromecast. This should again be equipped with Google TV, which is known to be based on Android TV OS.
However, the new Chromecast should not be a successor to the current model. According to previous information, it is very likely a variant for a cheaper entry into the Google TV world.
Amazon just does it better
So Google is likely to reduce the internal hardware and lower the price as a result. That sounds understandable at first because it allows you to win more customers. Amazon is pursuing a similar strategy.
But there the base is already much better, above all faster. Even without an offer, the top model Fire Stick 4K Max, for example, is cheaper than the current Chromecast with Google TV – and much more powerful on the go.
So instead of adding more in this area, which I think is absolutely necessary, Google would rather release a device with even worse performance data. Not necessarily a plan that I like as a user of the current Chromecast model. Which ultimately disappointed me so much that I switched back to the Amazon ecosystem.
