Russia reportedly fined Google 3.5 million rubles ($46,000) for failing to remove banned content. Previously, Google has been fined several times by Russia for similar issues and has now accumulated more than 60 million rubles (over $800,000).
According to reports, on January 18, Beijing time, a Moscow court said that it had ordered Alphabet’s Google to pay a fine of 4 million rubles because Google did not delete the content blocked by Russia in time.
On December 7, the Russian capital Moscow Tagansky District Court No. 422 said today that according to the relevant provisions of the Russian Federation Administrative Offenses Code, Google was banned by the Russian government for failing to delete content that incites extremism, as well as unauthorized content. Localization of personal data of Russian users is subject to an additional administrative fine of 5 million rubles.
Last year Russia intensified its crackdown on big tech companies, including Google and Meta, on the grounds that some content was deemed illegal by Russia, but the companies did not remove it.
