Google’s Android phone/computer system is testing a new dark mode

Google is testing a new dark mode for its mobile phones/computers and other systems. This time they used true black (color number #000000) for OLED and AMOLED displays. There will be a better power-saving effect.

Many electronic product manufacturers have equipped their products with “dark mode”, such as iOS and macOS, which we are familiar with. Mobile computers can be switched to a theme with black as the main color.

Manufacturers claim that this can achieve protection at night. In addition, due to the material characteristics of OLED or AMOLED, the light-emitting point consumes less power under the black background, so theoretically the dark mode also has the purpose of saving power.

Google announced a new version of Dark Mode earlier this month, but so far, it has not been officially released. If the previous dark mode was a soothing dark gray, Google’s black is true black. Some users have seen on Google-based computers that the contrast between the gray font and the dark background is more pronounced.

But there is also some user feedback that this is too dark. For those who thought the previous “Dark Mode” wasn’t dark enough, True Dark Mode might be more to their taste and save power. However, there is no accurate data on how much power can be saved by turning on the dark mode.
