Tesla settles air pollution charges with EPA, pays $275K fine

Tesla has reached a settlement agreement with the US Environmental Protection Agency. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency previously found Tesla’s California car assembly plant violated the Clean Air Act.

Tesla will pay a fine of $275,000, according to a statement from the EPA on Tuesday. The fine is paltry considering Tesla’s fourth-quarter net profit hit $2.3 billion.

The EPA explained that between October 2016 and September 2019, Tesla’s Fremont plant violated regulations known as the National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants for Automotive Surface Coatings.

Tesla failed to develop and/or implement a work practice program that minimizes emissions of harmful air pollutants from the storage and mixing of materials in automotive painting operations.
