At the behest of the UK government, Facebook and Instagram blocked RT and Sputnik from users in the UK. This comes after Culture Secretary Nadine Doris urged Meta, TikTok and Twitter in a letter to restrict access to Russian state media, which she accused of spreading “destructive propaganda” to the UK.
Ms Doris said: I want to urge you to do everything you can to block the online export of RT and Sputnik content on your UK services, in the same way, you have across the EU.
A Meta spokesman told Sky News. “Earlier this week, we announced that we would be restricting access to RT and Sputnik across the EU. Consistent with that action, at the request of the UK government, we are currently also restricting access to RT and Sputnik in the UK.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Sunday when announcing EU sanctions on “the Kremlin’s media machine in the EU.
The state-owned RT and Sputnik and their subsidiaries will no longer be able to spread their lies to justify the war that Putin has waged. Earlier this week, YouTube made the decision to block access to both RT and Sputnik across Europe and the UK.
