Apple will release Apple Studio Display with higher resolution than Pro Display XDR

There are rumors that Apple has a new standalone display in the works. 9to5Mac has now heard from sources familiar with the matter that the company has been working on a new “Apple Studio Display” with a higher resolution than the Pro Display XDR.

While it’s unclear whether the new Apple Studio Display is a replacement for the Pro Display XDR or a new option in the lineup with unique features, people familiar with the matter say the new display has a 7K resolution.

By comparison, the Pro Display XDR features a 32-inch 6K (6016 x 3384) panel with 218 pixels per inch. The higher resolution could mean the new Apple Display will have a higher pixel density of 245PPI, or it will keep the same 218PPI as the Pro Display XDR, but present on a larger 36-inch panel.

It was reported in July 2021 that Apple was testing a new external monitor, codenamed “J327”, with an A13 chip inside. It turns out that, according to our sources, the Apple Studio Display is also codenamed J327, which means that Apple is still working on a standalone display with a dedicated Apple Silicon chip.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman recently reported that Apple is planning multiple new Macs in 2022, plus a new standalone display that’s half the price of the Pro Display XDR. In the past, Apple’s “Cinema Display” lineup has been available in multiple sizes — so it wouldn’t be surprising if the company once again offered customers two or more display options.

The launch schedule for the new monitor is unclear, but the company will hold a launch event on March 8 where it is rumored to unveil the new Macs.
