Apple develops Mac Studio described as a hybrid of Mac Mini and Mac Pro

Apple is working on a “Mac Studio” device that appears to be a mix of a Mac Pro and a Mac mini, according to 9to5Mac, which cited an unidentified whistleblower with knowledge of Apple’s plans. The device is a “compliment” to the rumored Mac mini and Mac Pro, but is largely based on the Mac mini.

It will have “more powerful hardware”, with two versions in the works. One device will use the same M1 Max chip found in the 2021 MacBook Pro models, while the other will use a more powerful Apple Silicon chip than the M1 Max.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman previously described a new version of the Mac Pro that would feature a smaller chassis and be sold alongside the larger-sized Mac Pro, and it sounds like the “Mac Studio” might be this smaller-sized Mac Pro. The smaller Mac Pro will offer up to 40 CPU cores and 128 GPU cores.

The Mac Studio is internally code-named J375, and while the naming is subject to change, it is also aimed at professional users and will be sold alongside the 7K “Apple Studio Display” that Apple is also developing.

There’s no word on when the Mac Studio will hit the market, but previous rumors suggest it could launch sometime around WWDC and then arrive in the fall.
