Apple releases watchOS 8.5 to improve internal system software

Apple has released watchOS 8.5, a small update focused on core software technology upgrades. While this update doesn’t appear to include any new user-facing features, there are some improvements for Apple Watch app developers.

For example, developers can now specify a preferred payment network in Apple Pay on the Apple Watch. Apple said the default payment card option will not be replaced, just to optimize the selection experience in the card pack interface. Plus, purchases made on the Apple TV can now be authorized on the Apple Watch with a double press of the button on the side.

The new watchOS update also brings bug fixes and improvements to many parts of the operating system, most notably the user experience of certain App Stores, to facilitate better transactions and downloads.

watchOS 8.5 is available for any Apple Watch Series 3 or later, and the build number for this version is 19T242. Apple watchOS updates are generally small, watchOS 8.3 added the Unity Lights watch the interface, and the watchOS 8.4 update was released entirely to solve the charging problems that plagued some users with Apple Watch Series 7 and earlier models.

watchOS 8.5 includes new features, improvements, and bug fixes, including:

  • Ability to authorize Apple TV purchases and subscriptions
  • COVID-19 Vaccination Card in Apple Wallet now supports EU digital COVID certificate format
  • An update to the arrhythmia notification aimed at improving atrial fibrillation recognition. Available in the US, Chile, Hong Kong, South Africa, and more where this feature is available.
  • Audio cues in Fitness+ provide audio commentary with visual demonstrations of movements during a workout.
