Linux Mint Debian Edition 5, built on Debian 11, has been released

The Linux Mint team released Linux Mint Debian Edition 5 (LMDE5) today. This is an effort to act as a safeguard in the event that Linux Mint deems it unsuitable to continue the flagship Ubuntu-based distribution in the future.

Linux Mint Debian Edition 5 is for those who prefer Debian base over Ubuntu, and for the developers, their latest step is to hedge against the possibility of “if Ubuntu disappears” whereby they will have a transition to upstream Path to Debian GNU/Linux.

With LMDE 5, the team has rebuilt on top of Debian 11 “Bullseye” while continuing to have the latest Cinnamon desktop and other desktop/application work being done by the Linux Mint team.
