The Pixel smartphones are already in their sixth generation and should have received a big boost in popularity, especially with the small restart last year – but how big was this really? Now the new Pixel Camera Services app gives interesting insights into the distribution and suggests that the sales figures are in the tens of millions.
Google is very silent about the sales figures for Pixel smartphones and has never published or commented on official figures. The greatest feeling is that you report that you have exceeded your own expectations. So you may have sold one more smartphone than expected or a million more than expected. Maybe, even more, at least a new Google app suggests so.
The Pixel Camera Services app first appeared a few days ago and is part of the Pixel Feature Drop for the Pixel 6 smartphones. In the future, it should enable a range of camera features for third-party apps, but for now, it only offers the benefit to a single app, Snapchat, and only on the Pixel phones. According to official information, the app is already pre-installed on the Pixel 6 smartphones and is now being updated via the Google Play Store.
According to the current status, it should therefore be a Pixel 6-exclusive app, so that the statistics only refer to the Pixel 6 smartphones. And that gives an interesting insight into the success of smartphones. Just take a look at the following screenshot of the statistics.
Ten million pixels 6?
According to the Google Play Store, the app had over 10 million installations right from the start. Because it can only be found on the Pixel 6 smartphones, there should already be more than ten million Pixel 6s in circulation. That sounds pretty exaggerated, but analysts were already saying last fall that Google is planning to sell seven million smartphones. If we then add that the smartphones were repeatedly sold out in the first few months and that Google spoke of exceeding the plans, that’s no longer so unrealistic.
So, should Google actually have sold ten million Pixel 6 smartphones by now? It’s not out of the question, but wouldn’t Google also be celebrating such a success with official numbers? It also seems possible that all Pixel smartphones running Android 12 are included in the numbers. In any case, there are far more than ten million actively used pixel smartphones of newer generations in circulation.
