After being fined $55 million, Apple relaxes rules on payments for third-party apps in the Netherlands

Apple has relaxed rules for developers of dating apps in the Netherlands, revamping a system that has clashed with Dutch regulators. The conflict resulted in a cumulative fine of $55 million for Apple.

The tweak will make it easier for developers to guide users to their own payment methods. This comes after Apple said earlier this week that it had submitted a new proposal to Dutch regulators.

In addition, Apple said it would begin allowing developers of reading apps, including video, music, books and cloud services, to direct users to pay for subscriptions online. The company announced the move last year as part of an agreement with Japan’s Fair Trade Commission and will apply globally.

This means that developers will no longer need to offer subscription services through Apple’s in-app payment system, bypassing the 15% to 30% cut.
