In the 2022 survey, users said the most eager request was a shorter domain name. And by making it free for the time being, the company seems intent on attracting more users to its platform. Google, Apple, and Microsoft offer similar aliases.

  • If you have a ProtonMail account, you can request a free proton.me email address by following these steps:
  • Go to Settings in the upper right corner of The Free Proton Mail
  • Click on “identity & address” in the left sidebar, or you can open the following page: https://account.protonmail.com/u/0/mail/identity-addresses
  • Click the “activate username@proton.me” button to activate

Just like that, you’ve now created a free proton.me an email address that now lets you send and receive emails securely, and you can even choose to use it as your default email address for sending emails.

However, it’s worth mentioning that even if you don’t become a paying user after April 30, your proton.me ID will always be free, as long as you keep your account active. After you activate proton.me ID, you can also continue to use your regular @Protonmail.com address.
