Users cannot force an update to an AirTag because this is done through a connected iPhone OTA. To ensure that the update occurs, you can put the AirTag in the communication range of your iPhone, but you must wait for the firmware to be pushed to the device. You can check the current AirTag firmware version by finding My Apps.

It’s worth noting that Apple plans to make this firmware available gradually, so not everyone will find the new firmware right away. 1% of AirTag users will receive it today, 10% on May 3, 25% on May 9, and fully online on May 13.

This staggered release schedule allows apple to ensure that firmware updates work as expected before they are made available to all users.
