Groups of tabs closed by mistake? Chrome for Android will allow you to restore them

Google Chrome for Android could soon receive a very convenient feature, already present on the desktop version of the very popular browser.

Apparently, the development team is working to implement even in the mobile version of the browser the option to restore an entire window or group of tabs, accidentally closed, comfortably with a touch; this is excellent news for those who live daily with many open tabs.

Google Chrome for Android: restoring tab groups to work

In the event that a user closes one or two tabs within Google Chrome, these can be easily restored via the browser history. If, on the other hand, a window with a large number of tabs or a group of tabs is closed (perhaps by mistake), the situation could become more complicated.

The conditional is a must because on the desktop version of Chrome there is an option that allows you to restore all the closed tabs with a single action, unlike the Android app where you will necessarily have to restore them one at a time (with consequent and obvious curses).

According to what was reported by the Chrome Story portal, within the code of Chromium (the open-source browser on which the Google Chrome code is based), there is an experimental flag that Google is exploiting to test the functionality and also bring it to the Android version of its browser.

The browser’s development team is expected to soon update Chrome’s “Recent Tabs” screen to include the option that will allow you to restore all tabs or groups of tabs closed with a single tap. Although the feature is under development, hopes of being able to see it at work in an upcoming release of Chrome Canary for Android are concrete: it would be the prelude to the future arrival on the stable version of the browser.

The feature has long been present in the desktop version of the browser

This convenient feature to restore an entire window or a group of closed tabs, mistakenly or not, has long been available in the desktop version of Google Chrome (recently updated to version 101). To take advantage of the feature, simply open the overflow menu (the three dots at the top right) and follow the path “History > Recently Closed > [group name] or [number of tabs] > Restore Group or Restore Window”.

The Chrome development team is also implementing the ability to save Chrome desktop tab groups for later use.

Those who take advantage of the latest version of the browser, namely 101.0.4951.41, by enabling the chrome://flags/#tab-groups-save flag, will find the new “save group” option that allows you to add the group of tabs on the favorites bar: in this way, the group can be safely closed (from open tabs) and then reopened at a later time.

It’s nice to see that Google is constantly working to make the browsing experience more and more efficient through tabs of their browser, both Android and desktop. Our advice is to keep Google Chrome updated to the latest version available, checking for updates:

  • If you already have Chrome for Windows, just follow the path “Settings > About Chrome” to check for updates. Alternatively, you can download the browser through the dedicated page on the official website.
  • As for Google Chrome for Android, however, you just need to check for updates through the Google Play Store.
