Apple is said to have been working on a temperature sensor for the Apple Watch for a few years and it was in the air for the Series 7 for a while. But as we know, Apple decided against it before the market launch.
Apple Watch Series 8 with new sensor
Then it was said that the temperature sensor will probably not come with the Series 8 either, but Mark Gurman rowed back a few days ago. It is not certain yet, but Apple wants to take this step.
Ming-Chi Kuo now also agrees with this statement, which means that the two best Apple sources have made a very similar statement. Even Kuo isn’t quite sure yet, so he looks at it with some skepticism.

Apple canceled body temperature measurement for Apple Watch 7 because the algorithm failed to qualify before entering EVT stage last year. I believe Apple Watch 8 in 2H22 could take body temperature if the algorithm can meet Apple’s high requirements before mass production.— 郭明錤 (Ming-Chi Kuo) (@mingchikuo) May 1, 2022
By the way, with the Series 7, it wasn’t the hardware, it’s finished. But it has limitations, so the algorithm used to measure it is crucial. And Apple supposedly has very high demands on the Apple Watch.
The challenge in implementing precise body temperature measurement is that skin temperature quickly varies depending on outside environments. A smartwatch can’t support core temperature measurement in terms of hardware, so it needs an excellent algorithm to work together.
