Sony WH-1000XM5 presented: Sony’s new headphones cost 419 euros

Can Sony inspire as much with its new WH-1000XM5 headphones as with its predecessor? Customers can find out from the end of May if they spend 419 euros. Thanks to noise reduction with eight microphones and an Auto NC optimizer, the new WH-1000XM5 should offer music enjoyment.

According to Sony, the new design – not as foldable as its predecessor – allows for comfortable carrying and worry-free listening to music throughout the day with up to 30 hours of battery life. If time is short, the headphones can be charged in just 3 minutes for 3 hours of listening time thanks to the quick charge function with USB Power Delivery (PD)11.

According to Sony, noise cancellation has been improved – with the help of the integrated processor V1, the WH-1000XM5 fully exploits the potential of Sony’s HD noise-canceling processor QN1, while the specially designed 30mm driver unit further improves the sound quality.

Quick access lets users set up their headphones to restart Spotify playback with just two or three taps. The WH-1000XM5 also has a proximity sensor that detects whether the headphones are in use or not. It detects when it’s being worn and adjusts playback accordingly to save power.

According to Sony, the “Precise Voice Pickup Technology” controls the microphones in the headphones and performs advanced audio signal processing to recognize the wearer’s voice even more precisely for hands-free calling or when using the “Speak-to-Chat” function.

The WH-1000XM5 can be connected to two devices simultaneously via Bluetooth. When a call comes in, the headphones will recognize which device is ringing and connect to it automatically. Besides, the user can also switch the headphones to either device with a single button press.

The WH-1000XM5 also supports Google’s Fast Pair function, which makes it easy to determine where the WH-1000XM5 is located. This is done by sounding a tone or checking the last known position. Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa are also supported.
