Russian Android users report that they can’t upgrade the Chrome browser

A growing number of Russian Android users report encountering errors when trying to upgrade their Chrome browser. The number of complaints is increasing every day, but so far the cause of the problem remains unknown and unresolved. According to numerous user reviews on Russian news agencies and on the Play Store, the problems started on May 9, 2022, when Google released Chrome 101 for Android.

Those trying to install the latest version get an error saying “Fail to install Google Chrome” (couldn’t install Google Chrome). The message further advises the user to try again, and if that doesn’t help, follow the troubleshooting tips.

Google has announced that starting May 5, 2022, Russian users and developers will be banned from downloading or updating paid apps from the Play Store. However, the Chrome browser is free, so it should be outside of this new policy.

Also, the error message doesn’t make it clear why the update failed, whether it was due to sanctions or a technical issue. Meanwhile, Google’s support agent on the Play Store advised Russian users to find a solution in support community discussions.
