The Google Play Store becomes more specific about app compatibility

Apparently, the more modern look of the Web version of the Google Play Store, made available to a large number of users in recent days, is not the only novelty that the developer team of the Mountain View giant was working on. In the last few hours, another modification concerning the Store has been released.

The Google Play Store is enriched with a new section

Within the section “About this app”, the item “Compatibility for active devices ” has been added at the bottom of the page, which the Google team explains as follows:

join us on telegram

This section shows if this app works on your devices. You will only see devices that are linked to your Google account and that have been active in the last 30 days. The smartphone is shown first (complete with device name), followed by Wear OS smartwatches and AndroidTV or Google TV devices.

The items included in this section are as follows:

  • Compatibility – works on your device
  • Version
  • Download size
  • Operating system required

There is some “repeated” data in the information on the app but this new section is clearly general and has been designed to be simpler and more intuitive (just think of the information on compatibility), highlighting how the Google Play Store is no longer only a platform for smartphones and tablets, also supporting other kinds of devices, such as smartwatches and Google TV devices.

Wearable app development has been on the rise for some time while the adoption of Android Automotive will continue to grow in the coming years and the Google Play Store team wants to make that platform an ideal and centralized place to manage everything.

This new section was found only on version 30.6.16-21 of the Google Play Store and at the moment it has been made available only to a limited number of users.
