Apple unveils real-time text translation feature for photo and video content and improves dictation

Apple’s iOS system has already made our lives easier by letting us copy and paste text in photos, and now that same live text feature will extend to video, as well as its translation app. If you’re watching a video, of course, you can now pause the frame and select text, as you currently do in Photos, but for photos and videos, Apple is giving us more options to interact with the language of our choice.

Soon, we will be able to translate real-time text into another language, or quickly convert monetary amounts. This can be helpful when you’re traveling in a country where you don’t speak the same language and need to read street signs, or if you’re wondering if that lunch special is really a good deal. To use the feature, users can navigate to Apple’s Translate app, which will now host a live camera view.

Apple also plans to improve dictation, which could serve as an accessibility tool. Apple says dictation is used more than 18 billion times a month because it’s faster than typing. But we’ve all had a text message from an older family member with really awkward punctuation, you know they used dictation. Now, Apple is planning to improve automatic punctuation, and it will also allow you to add emojis with your voice — as they put it during their WWDC keynote, “smiley emojis.”

The new dictation feature will also make it easier to switch back and forth between typing and dictation, making the transition between speech and touch more seamless. But when it comes to sending text messages, perhaps the most anticipated update lies in the ability to edit and unsend messages.
