iPadOS 16 goes official

Apple will bring all the new features from iOS 16 to iPadOS, as well as some from macOS Ventura, so these are not mentioned separately here. The iPad is finally getting a weather app too. Cooperation is now the priority.

As soon as you open the share sheet, collaboration can be started. For example, if you send an iMessage to an iMessage group about a note, everyone will be instantly added to the collaboration. You can also start a call or send iMessages directly from the app. Collaboration – such as sharing the screen – can also be started within FaceTime. Will primarily work with Apple apps, but an API is also available for developers.

A new Free Form app was briefly shown. This is Apple’s counterpart to Microsoft’s Whiteboard. There you can create a whiteboard with ideas and more together. All in real-time and with different elements. Everything you need to work. Free Form was just a sneak peek and is due out later this year. Will be available directly on iOS, iPadOS and macOS.

Metal 3 brings the new features already mentioned in macOS to iPad and improves tablet gaming. The Game Center dashboard gets an activity view that shows you your friends’ activities, such as who broke a high score and how the leaderboard changed as a result.

The iPad should get more desktop-class apps. Apple added even more improvements to make the project a reality. Major updates to the Files app, full system undo/redo, a new find/replace system, and much more. Toolbars can now also be customized and APIs are available for developers to bring the changes to other apps as well.

iPadOS 16 also has a Reference Mode to ensure color fidelity and more for creative work. The M1 in the latest iPads also enables a new display scaling system that lets you change the pixel density.

The macOS Stage Manager is intended to improve multitasking on the tablet and brings window management to the tablet. The active window is visible, even open apps slide to the side and remain visible. For the first time on the iPad, it is possible to work with overlapping windows. Windows can also be resized and when the iPad is connected to a display, the entire display is now FINALLY filled with content. No more 4:3. That’s helpful. What Federighi showed there looked really much improved.
