iPadOS 16 supports letting apps use on-body flash memory as virtual memory on the M1 iPad

Apple added virtual memory swapping in iPadOS 16, allowing apps on the M1 iPad Pro and iPad Air to use free and available storage as additional memory for higher workloads. With iPadOS 15, some apps can use up to 12GB of memory on the M1 iPad Pro, out of a total of 16GB of physical memory on the M1 iPad Pro.

With iPadOS 16 and virtual memory swapping, Apple is dramatically increasing the amount of memory that apps can use by mining the available storage space on the device.

Apps can use up to 16GB of memory for M1 iPads with 256GB of storage and above, virtual memory swapping and higher memory caps are part of a slew of features in iPadOS 16, including Stage Manager, which is new for the M1 Exclusive to iPad Pro and iPad Air.

Stage Manager is a new way for users who want to be more productive to use the iPad, allowing users to open multiple application windows at the same time, on top of each other. Stage Manager also implements full external display support on iPadOS for the first time.

iPadOS 16 is currently available to developers, with a public beta planned for July. iPadOS 16 will be available to all supported iPads later this fall.
