Apple released iOS 16, iPadOS 16 systems, and has released the first developer preview Beta. Apple is adding virtual memory swapping to iPadOS 16, allowing apps on the latest iPad Pro and iPad Air models to use free and free storage as extra memory for demanding workloads.
The zoom display feature, driven by the power of the M1 chip, allows users to increase the pixel density presented on the display to see more content in an app, which is especially useful when viewing split screens.

In iPadOS 15, some apps can use up to 12GB of memory on the highest-end M1 iPad Pro with 16GB of total memory. With iPadOS 16 and virtual memory swapping, Apple has significantly increased the amount of memory that apps can use by taking advantage of the storage space available on the device.
For the M1 iPad Pro model, applications can use up to 16GB of memory to handle the most demanding workloads. Apple’s footnote on the iPadOS 16 preview page says that this also applies to fourth-generation iPad Air models with at least 256GB of storage, but that’s probably a mischaracterization as it’s better suited for fifth-generation models with an M1 chip iPad Air models.
Virtual memory swapping and higher memory caps join a host of features included with iPadOS 16 that are exclusive to the M1-series iPad Pro and iPad Air, including “front-end scheduling.” In fact, according to Digital Trends, Apple confirmed that prestage scheduling relies on this virtual memory swap, suggesting that the fifth generation is indeed the correct “iPad Air” model.
Front Office Scheduling is a new way for professional users to use the iPad, allowing users to open multiple windows of an application at once, layered on top of each other. For the first time, Prestage Scheduling also enables full external display support on iPadOS.
iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 are scheduled to release public betas in July, and developer preview betas are currently available. iOS 16, iPadOS 16, macOS Ventura, and watchOS 9 will all be publicly released this fall.
