File Manager tabs are really here

We know that a new feature to look forward to in Windows 11 this year is the new multi-tab support for the file manager. Now Microsoft has pushed a preview version of Windows 11 Build 25136 for Dev users in the Insider channel, and in this version, the file manager tab is really here!

It is understood that Windows 11 Build 25136 doesn’t include a ton of new features, but its support for the much-anticipated file manager tabs has given it a lot of attention. In the past, although Windows has improved many functions for the file manager, such as the integration of OneDrive and a more modern ribbon design, many people regret the lack of tabs. Now, this regret has been made up.

Microsoft officials said that the file manager’s tabs will not be released to the public right now, and the feature is not ready for everyone, and currently hopes to test it only with a small group of users.

The file manager tab is a feature that Microsoft has been trying to implement in Windows since 2017. In 2017, Microsoft tried to introduce the “Windows Sets” function in Windows, which can add multi-tab support features in all Windows 10 applications, including settings, control panels, and file managers. However, Microsoft canceled the project. Windows Sets are long gone, but Microsoft has redesigned the file manager to allow it to support the multi-tab feature alone.

In addition to the file manager tabs, Windows 11 Build 25136 preview also adds a few other new features. For example, a new sidebar has been introduced in the file manager, as shown in the screenshot, with a new layout on the left side that allows users to easily navigate to important folders. If you log into cloud storage in Windows 11, the new file manager can also pin commonly used OneDrive directories.

In Windows 11 Build 25136 Preview, the file manager’s navigation pane has also gotten some other enhancements, such as Windows folders no longer appear under This PC, which reduces clutter and makes it easier to organize drive views. In addition, when accessing OneDrive, the address bar can now correctly display the path in it, and users can determine whether the currently accessed folder is cloud or local.

The taskbar has also ushered in an update of dynamic widgets. Before, the Windows 11 taskbar was static, but now the widget weather can be dynamically updated. In addition, Microsoft is also exploring the taskbar to support more widget content, for example, in addition to checking the weather, you can also see real-time updated information from sports and financial widgets. Microsoft also plans to push breaking news alerts directly to the taskbar.

Other improvements in Windows 11 Build 25136 are as follows:

  • If you find that the GIF expression in the input method is inappropriate, it is now supported to report it to Microsoft.
  • Fixed an issue where desktop computers were incorrectly detected as tablets. This bug accidentally enables compact mode and disables the ability to hide checkboxes in the file manager.
  • Fixed an issue that caused a bug check for SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION.
  • Fixed an issue where taskbar apps overflowed with system tray icons.
  • Fixed an issue where notifications would no longer flicker when hovering over the app.
  • Fixed an issue where the start menu could only display one list of recommended items.
  • A large number of applications can be pinned to the start menu.
