First down, now up again: Google’s price increase for Pixel phones

Over the past few years, Google’s Pixel phones have taken a very nice direction in pricing. In the meantime, it went down. And even when that was no longer the case, Google was able to keep the prices at a surprisingly low level. But it can be seen that the price curve is probably slowly rising again now.

Entry into the Pixel a series is more expensive than ever

A look at summer shows that getting into the Pixel series will be more expensive than ever. The first Pixel 3a only cost 399 euros. But it was even cheaper. The Pixel 4a made it possible to enter the world of mobile phones from Google with a price of only 349 euros. Back then, if you wanted more power, you could go for the Pixel 4a 5G for 499 euros.

Only the Pixel 6a will be available this year and it will be available for 459 euros. That’s Google’s RRP. Technically, it is more comparable to the Pixel 4a 5G and is therefore okay in terms of price, but beginners in the Pixel series simply no longer have a cheaper option. Google has thus left the price limit of 400 euros behind. Too bad.

The most important key data for the Google Pixel 6a:

  • Google Tensor processor
  • 6.1-inch OLED display
  • 6 gigabytes of RAM, 128 gigabytes of storage
  • 4410 mAh battery, up to 72 hours run time

  • 12.2-megapixel main camera (IMX363)
  • 12-megapixel ultra-wide (IMX386)
  • 8-megapixel front camera (IMX355)

  • Dimensions: 152.2 x 71.8 x 8.9mm (smaller than Pixel 6)

  • Colors: black, white, green
  • Price: 459 euros RRP

The price of the flagship models initially rushed down

Google has recently continued to surprise in the upper price range. While the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL still cost 749 and 899 euros, respectively, the price of the top model has not increased even after two years (Pixel 6 Pro). And in the years that followed (Pixel 5, Pixel 6), the basic variant was even significantly cheaper for only 629 or 649 euros.

The increase from Pixel 5 to Pixel 6 was only 20 euros. But I’m almost afraid that Google won’t be able to maintain these prices in the coming winter or autumn. Inflation, war, lack of chips – you know. Anyway, I would be surprised. Unless you are trying to cross-finance the devices behind the scenes in order to keep the comparatively low prices. I mean, even Xiaomi now costs more.
