Clarus the dogcow has returned on the macOS Ventura

As we know, Susan Kare has created some great designs for Mac, Windows, and more. But beyond Stage Manager and Live Captions, we are now seeing the return of Clarus the Dogcow on macOS Ventura.

The reason why “dog” + “cow” is used to refer to this mascot is that the quality and resolution of the original image are so low that many people are arguing whether it is a dog or a cow.

Even so, it’s an interesting attempt by Apple to provide users with intuitive print previews. In the settings dialog, Clarus will tell you whether the content on the paper should be output in portrait or landscape orientation (and supports scaling).

Sadly, Clarus the dogcow suddenly disappeared in the late 1990s. We won’t see its return in some apps until 2022 (using the Command-Shift-P print key combination).

Interestingly, as early as in a report in March this year, someone broke the news that Apple’s Clarus the dogcow egg appeared in the iOS native input method.
