Pixel 6: Problems with the protective cases, Google’s wrong choice of material causes discoloration and deformation

With the Pixel 6 smartphones, Google has not only given the devices a new design but also revised the protective covers and adapted them in shape and style. The result is impressive, but only in the first two months. Numerous users have complained about the poor quality of the protective cases and now there is a lot of “inside information” on how the discoloration and warping could have happened.

The restart of the Pixel series was successful, but unfortunately the same cannot be said of the protective covers. Google sells the Pixel 6 protective cases for $30 each, so buyers can expect high quality and durability. Unfortunately, this is not the case, because just a few months after purchase, many protective cases show severe discoloration and are completely deformed in some places (see the gallery below).

You could take it for isolated cases, but numerous users have found themselves all over the web (including here on the blog) who have confirmed the problems. You have to keep in mind that nobody has used the protective covers for longer than just over seven months. After three years you might still be able to accept that, but not after half a year.

Now AndroidPolice has been able to find an inside source that is not said to be related to the production of the Google cases but has expertise in this area. It boils down to Google making several wrong decisions along with the case maker, who is unknown. The colors chosen, the transparency, the material used, and also the design have weaknesses where these problems were probably to be expected. Take a look at the following pictures as an example.

AP has published a very extensive and in-depth article, which mainly deals with the choice of material for such protective cases. Manufacturers with many years of expertise and high-quality standards rely on a mix of materials, and would never produce such a light color with transparency and design the cutouts for buttons and connections differently. In terms of quality, Google’s protective cases are okay, but the material chosen is simply unsuitable for this purpose. That pretty much sums up the whole dilemma.

After the quite popular fabric cases of the last few years, the Pixel 6 smartphones wanted to shine in the truest sense of the word, which should also be achieved with glossy cases. If mate had been chosen, there would have been fewer problems. If the cut-outs for buttons had been made of a softer material, there would hardly have been any deformation. If you had chosen a darker color and less transparency, the inevitable discoloration would be much less visible. Especially not after such a short time.

You have to ask yourself how that could have happened. Of course, Google does not produce the protective covers itself but sells them under its own name. Which producer do you have to have found that lets something like that through or doesn’t explicitly warn its major customers about some decisions? But it might have fallen on deaf ears… Expect the protective cases for the Pixel 6a and Pixel 7 to have a very similar design. Hopefully, the reports were taken seriously enough early enough to compensate for the weaknesses as much as possible.
